Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association

The AHA ACLS course builds on the foundation of Basic Life Support (BLS), emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR, advanced cardiovascular interventions, and effective team dynamics in resuscitation.

📘 Required Course Material

You must purchase or have access to an AHA ACLS Provider Manual (2020 edition) prior to class. Options include:


Course Structure

Learners actively participate in simulated clinical scenarios and practice essential skills in hands-on learning stations. You will rotate roles as an individual provider, team member, and team leader.

Skills covered include:

  • Defibrillation & cardioversion

  • Single-rescuer techniques

  • Airway management

  • Rhythm recognition

  • IV/IO access

  • Medication usage

  • Transcutaneous pacing

  • Effective team dynamics in resuscitation


Intended Audience

This course is designed for healthcare professionals who work in emergency response, intensive care, critical care, or other settings where advanced cardiovascular life support skills are required.

Pre-Class Requirements

  • Review the ACLS Provider Manual (2020 edition).

  • Complete the ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment & Precourse Work (bring completion certificate to class).

  • Review and understand cardiac rhythms, including:

    • VFib, VTach, PEA, Asystole, Bradycardia, AV Blocks, Sinus Bradycardia/Tachycardia, SVT

  • Familiarize yourself with ACLS algorithms and pharmacology.

Certification Requirement:

  • Must hold a current BLS certification.

  • Bring a physical or emailed copy of your Precourse Completion Certificate. (If emailing, send to oliviamccann@creighton.edu with the class date/time in the subject line.)


Certification

Upon successful completion, learners will receive an AHA ACLS Course Completion eCard (valid for 2 years). eCards are delivered by email—please register with a personal email address (not a school or work email).
